Tragic Accident in Rio: Bus Driver's Sudden Illness Leads to Fatality and Injury




In a shocking turn of events, a tragic accident occurred in Rio de Janeiro, leaving one man dead and another injured. The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon, May 1st, on Rua São Francisco Xavier in the Maracanã neighborhood, near the Mangueira viaduct.

According to the Military Police, officers from the 6th BPM (Tijuca) were called to the scene of a traffic incident, where a bus from the Rodoviária Âncora Matias company had struck two people near a tire repair shop. The victims were identified as César de Souza Gomes, 44, and Alan Antunes da Silva.

Tragically, César did not survive his injuries and passed away at the scene. Alan, on the other hand, was rushed to the Municipal Hospital Souza Aguiar in downtown Rio, where his condition is reported to be stable.

Family members of the deceased revealed that César was working at a garage and was repairing his own motorcycle when the bus struck him, dragging him for approximately 30 meters. A security camera captured the harrowing moment, showing the victim crouched down working on the motorcycle when the bus passed by, colliding with the parked vehicles.

The bus driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, claimed that he had suddenly fallen ill and only regained consciousness after the accident had already occurred. Civil Police officers from the 25th DP (Engenho Novo) have taken the driver's statement and are now analyzing footage from the bus's cameras to verify his account.

According to the investigating officer, Geovan Omena, the driver's statement alleges that he experienced a sudden illness and lost consciousness, leading to the tragic incident. The officer explained that the camera footage from the bus will be crucial in determining the veracity of the driver's claim and the direction of the investigation.

The lawyer representing César's family, Marcelo de Souza Andrade, expressed the family's devastation over the situation. He stated that he accompanied the bus driver's testimony at the police station and is currently compiling a list of the damaged motorcycles and other material losses.

The incident has left the community in shock, with motorcycle courier Rafael Souza, who was at the garage at the time of the accident, expressing his uncertainty about the driver's condition and the sequence of events that led to the fatality and injury.
